What the noises mean

The guides below are the explanations we give on site, written down. They cover the parts, the wear, the seasons and the upgrades, so you can revisit them whenever the door raises a question.

Repair & Maintenance

My opener is old and has no photo eyes. Can it still be inspected?

Yes. Older openers rely on contact reversal alone, so the board test carries more weight and is run carefully against the maker's procedure, along with the manual balance check, the force setting and the release. The report records what the opener has and how it performed. An opener built before photo eyes became standard is flagged for replacement in the report, since makers recommend moving off that generation of opener rather than treating photo eyes as a nice-to-have. How should I prepare the garage before the visit?

Move vehicles out of the garage or well clear of the door's path, and clear the floor under the opening and along both tracks so a stepladder can be set up. Keep children and pets out of the garage during the work. If you have the door or opener manual, or know the model, have it handy. A short note of what you have noticed and when, especially in cold weather, is genuinely useful. Garage Door Tune-Up

How is a reset different from a track repair?

In a reset the rail is sound and the work is putting rollers, cables and sections back where that rail expects them, with minor alignment corrections. In a track repair the rail itself is the problem and must be straightened, re-hung or partly replaced first. One visit can include both, and the technician tells you which you need after looking at the door rather than guessing from the description. Off-Track Garage Door Reset

What happens if my door's design has been discontinued?

It happens with older doors, since embossing patterns, joint profiles and colours change over the years. The technician looks for the nearest current section from the same manufacturer and describes how it would differ in look and fit. Sometimes the difference is minor and acceptable; sometimes the joint no longer mates. In that case the options are a section from a compatible series, or replacing the door as a whole, and both are explained before anything is ordered. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware

Can I replace just the one roller that looks bad?

One roller can be changed on its own, and sometimes that is the sensible stopgap after a wheel breaks. The better result comes from a full set, because the other wheels have done the same number of cycles and are close behind, and mixing new with old, or nylon with steel, leaves the door running unevenly and sounding different on each side. A matched set also lets the technician set every top fixture and check every hinge in one pass. Garage Door Roller Replacement

What information helps when I book the visit?

Whether the door is closed, open or stuck; where the noise or the gap appears and roughly how high; whether you can see a cracked, bent or loose hinge and whether it is at the edge or the middle; whether the door is a single or a double, steel or wood, and how many panels it has; and whether anything hit the door lately. A photo of the hinge and its stamped number is useful. Garage Door Hinge Replacement

Why does the door catch at the same spot every trip?

A catch that repeats in one place is the signature of a local track fault: a dent, a spread section, a step at a joint, or a bracket that has let the track drift. Each roller reaches the flaw at the same point in the travel and bumps over it. The technician finds the spot by running a roller through the channel by hand, then dresses or replaces that length and checks the rest of the run for the same problem. What is the cable drum, and when does it need replacing too?

The drum is the grooved wheel on each end of the torsion shaft that the cable winds onto as the door opens. Its grooves guide the cable in a single layer and its shape sets how the door is balanced through its travel. A drum is replaced when the grooves are worn or cracked, the cable slot is damaged, or it has spun on the shaft and scored it. Drums are changed in pairs. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Openers & Access

My remote only works when I am close to the door. Why?

Short range is almost always interference or a weak signal, not a broken opener. Certain LED bulbs, including ones fitted in the opener's own sockets, emit noise on the frequency remotes use. A remote battery near the end of its life also loses reach before it fails outright. The technician tests range with a known-good remote, swaps bulbs, checks the antenna wire hangs free below the head unit, and replaces the battery or remote as needed. My opener is decades old. Can the chain drive still be repaired?

Often, yes. Gear kits, sprockets, chains and trolleys are still made for many older heads, and tension, phase and limits can be set on almost any unit. The limit is parts: some makers no longer support units made before the mid-1990s, and those also lack the photo-eye protection expected today. The technician checks parts availability for your model and lays out repair beside renewal so you can decide with the facts. Chain-Drive Opener Repair

What are the signs a belt is wearing out?

Cracks across the back of the rubber, a shiny glazed surface, a fuzzy or frayed edge, teeth worn flat or torn away in a stretch, and cords showing through the rubber. The clip at the trolley can also go brittle and snap. Most belts show one of these long before they fail, which is why a glance along the rail every few months catches a repair early. Belt-Drive Opener Repair

What happens to the old opener?

The technician takes it away. The steel rail, chain and angle iron go to metal recycling and the head unit, with its motor and circuit board, goes to electronics recycling rather than the landfill. Old remotes are cleared from memory before they are discarded or handed back to you, and any wiring that is not being reused is removed from the ceiling and walls so the garage is left tidy. Installation & Upgrades

Do I need a new opener at the same time?

Not automatically. The decision depends on the existing operator's condition, compatibility, attachment and the customer's access goals. Door replacement and opener replacement are separate scopes that can be coordinated. Evaluating the mechanical door first keeps the operator decision grounded in how the new assembly moves and what equipment information supports. Sectional Garage Door Replacement

Can decorative handles and hinges be added?

Decorative hardware can often be included when it is approved for the chosen door and installed in the specified locations. The order records finish, pattern and placement so the exterior remains balanced. Functional lifting hardware is a separate matter and must provide a safe gripping point. Added pieces should not obstruct section joints, tracks, seals or the door's path. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation

What information should I provide before the visit?

Share the finished opening size if known, photos from inside and outside, any door labels, renovation drawings, permit notes, design pressure, and details about recent wind movement or damage. Mention windows, insulation, ceiling obstructions, and the existing opener. These details help the technician prepare a focused survey while measurements and mounting conditions are still verified on site. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement

What happens if the garage floor is not level?

The survey measures the variation and determines how the bottom section and seal can meet it. A flexible astragal can accommodate modest changes, while a pronounced crown, dip or damaged threshold may call for related floor or threshold work. The door itself is installed level for reliable travel; the sealing approach is selected separately to follow the practical shape of the floor. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
