Garage Doors in Waterloo, OntarioSectional, roll-up,wood or steel.

Every door type has its own hardware, its own habits and its own ways of wearing out. We work on all of them, carry parts for the common ones, and know where the odd ones tend to need attention. Bring us the door you have.

From the shop

Safe for everyone who walks under it.

Noise is usually the first complaint and the easiest to trace. Steel rollers rumbling, hinges squeaking, a chain slapping the rail, panels rattling against loose hardware. We go through the door from top to bottom, tighten and lubricate what needs it, and replace the rollers or hinges that have simply worn out.

Repairs and new doors

Springs and cables carry the weight, tracks and rollers guide it, the opener supplies the push, and the seals keep the weather out. When any of these falls behind, there is a service below for it.

Springs

Springs & Hardware

Lifting hardware fails in sequence: a dry bearing loads a cable, the cable frays at the drum, the drum groove wears, the spring works harder than it should. Catching the first link in that chain saves the rest.

Garage Door Roller ReplacementEvery morning the door announces itself: a rattle on the way up, a grinding squeal on the way down, loud enough that the neighbours know when you leave. A spray of lubricant settled it for a day or two, then the racket…

  3. Gloved hands holding a vertical garage-door track and a wrench at its mounting bracket beside a door hinge. — Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement, Waterloo
Garage Door Track Repair or ReplacementThe garage floor has settled at one corner, and the door now scrapes the concrete on that side while daylight shows at the other. The track on the low side sits crooked against a jamb that has split.
  4. Person kneeling inside a garage reaching up along the vertical track of a white paneled door, with a toolbox and drill nearby. — Garage Door Cable Replacement, Waterloo
Garage Door Cable ReplacementThe cable has wrapped itself around the shaft above the door instead of sitting on its drum. When the opener runs, the door lurches, one side rises before the other, and the top panel twists.
  5. Person holding metal bars beside exposed coiled springs above a garage door. — Torsion Spring Replacement, Waterloo
Torsion Spring ReplacementOne side of the door sits higher than the other in the tracks, and a lift cable is hanging slack or has jumped off its drum. On a two-spring door this often follows one spring letting go while the other keeps pulling.

Which fix fits?

The opener is decades old and has no safety sensors. The usual fix

UsuallyOpener replacement.

WhyModern openers reverse on contact and on a broken beam; the upgrade is worth doing for the sensors alone.

You would like to close the door from your phone when you have forgotten. The usual fix

UsuallySmart controller installation.

WhyA small controller pairs with most openers and reports the door's position to an app.

A remote has gone missing and you are not sure where. The usual fix

UsuallyErase and reprogram remotes.

WhyClearing the opener's memory and re-pairing the remotes you still have keeps the lost one from opening the door.

One side of the door sits higher than the other in the tracks, and a lift cable is hanging slack or has jumped off its drum. The usual fix

UsuallyTorsion Spring Replacement

WhyThink of the opener as a helper, not a lifter.

A bang like a dropped toolbox came from the garage last night. The usual fix

UsuallyExtension Spring Replacement

WhyA spring visit follows a fixed order, so you know what to expect.

You pulled the red cord to move the door by hand during the power cut, lifted it to about waist height and let go.The usual fix

UsuallyGarage Door Balance Adjustment

WhyA garage door is balanced when its springs carry almost the whole weight of the door, so the door itself is nearly weightless in your hands and the opener only has to guide it.

How a visit goes

Garage doors here live through a wide swing of seasons, and a tune-up before winter pays for itself in smooth mornings. Cold thickens tired lubricant and stiffens steel, so a door that ran fine in September can groan in January.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 33%Newer homes

About 33% of homes in Waterloo were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Newer garages tend to have generous headroom and a finished ceiling, so options such as a jackshaft opener mounted beside the door, or a high-lift conversion for a car hoist, are practical. The technician checks the space and explains what would fit.

  • 49%

Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in Waterloo (2021 Census).

Where housing types are mixed, some doors belong entirely to the homeowner and others are subject to a condo corporation's rules on colour and style. Before recommending a replacement door we ask who has a say, so the door chosen is one that can actually be installed.

Questions and answers

My door has a lock bar. Should it be used with an opener?

Not while the opener is connected. If the slide lock is engaged and someone presses the remote, the opener pulls against a locked door and can bend the top section or strip its gear. On a door driven by an opener the lock is usually disabled or removed during a tune-up, and the opener's own hold on the door provides the security. If you want a manual lock for holidays, the technician can show you how to use it safely with the opener unplugged.

How should I prepare the garage before the visit?

Move vehicles out of the garage or well clear of the door's path, and clear the floor under the opening and along both tracks so a stepladder can be set up. Keep children and pets out of the garage during the work. If you have the door or opener manual, or know the model, have it handy. A short note of what you have noticed and when, especially in cold weather, is genuinely useful.

How long does a tune-up take?

For a single or double residential door with an opener, allow roughly an hour to two hours on site. The inspection and the two observed cycles take a fixed amount of time; the rest depends on how many fasteners have loosened, whether the sensors need realigning and whether you approve a small part replacement, such as a worn roller, during the same visit. Spring or cable work, if found necessary, is scheduled as its own job.

Are springs different for a heavy wooden or insulated door?

Yes, and this is exactly why the door is weighed. A solid wood door or a thick insulated steel door can weigh far more than a single-skin steel door of the same size, so it needs heavier wire, a larger coil or a second spring to balance. The technician measures the actual weight and selects accordingly, so the finished door lifts as easily by hand as a lighter one.

Why does my door start to close and then go straight back up?

Often the opener believes something is in the doorway, which happens when the receiving sensor stops seeing the beam, whether from an object in the path, a bracket knocked out of line, a dirty or frosted lens, sun in the receiving eye, or a damaged wire. Binding, a force setting or the door arm can cause the same symptom, so the sensor lights and the opener's flashing pattern are read first, and the technician fixes the cause they point to rather than guessing.
